A few months back my friend Shara asked me if I wanted to come up to her farm for a girl’s weekend. Of course, this sounded like so much fun and I said yes! What was even more fun, was that Shara thought it would be a good idea to invite some girls we didn’t know very well or at all. I always love meeting and talking to new people and was down for an adventurous weekend. We got a great group of girls together and ended up having an extra spot so I invited my old childhood friend Ashley to come along – I knew she would be a great addition!
Shara’s 700 acre horse farm is called The Buffalo Farm and it’s just north of Algonquin in a town called Mattawa. Her family has been working on it for the last 5 years and are continuing to add to it, including a tipi and 2 storey yurt that will be ready by this summer. We stayed in a 350ish sq ft yurt that is currently on the property. It sleeps 6 and has absolutely no electricity. We kept the yurt warm by keeping a fire going at all times, including waking up in the middle of the night to add wood. The weekend we went got down to -26!!!!! Let me tell you, this cold definitely tested our outdoorsy skills. We slept under 4-10 (hahaha) blankets each and wore lots of layers to keep us warm. To light the yurt, we had lots of candles and flashlights – it was quite romantic haha.
During the day we cooked food over the fire in the yurt, drank lots of wine, shared stories with one another, ate candy and ran in and out of the yurt/car quickly to take fun photos before we froze our butts off. Even though it was freezing it was all part of the fun and there were no complaints!
We all got along so well and had such a great time. It was definitely one of the more adventurous things I’ve done in a while and it was such a fun experience. I can’t wait to get back there this summer.
